The Dremel is attached to one end of the extension cord and the other end is attached to the wall outlet. Just one AC wire goes through the relay that switches the electricity based on the signal from the Arduino. For this, I placed it in an enclosure and connected ends of a damaged extension cord to it (the damaged section was naturally cut off). The relay board needs to be connected to switch the 230V AC power. The spindle signal from the Gravograph needs to be tied to the ground, otherwise the spindle motor in Gravograph will keep on spinning. By reconnecting the spindle signal from the internal signal in the Gravograph to this board, it’s possible to use Arduino for starting and stopping the dremel. This requires just 5v voltage, ground and a control signal for toggling the relay. The solution is very easy: a cheap relay board. It would be much more convenient to get this controlled by the Arduino as well. One issue with this setup remains: in order to start and stop the tool, you have to manually reach for the switch.

To give the tool free movement without bending the flexible shaft too much, I hung the Dremel from the ceiling above the machine. Metal is not flexible like the plastic pipe. Probably a metal pipe would be better, but it would have to be of exactly correct size. This fits rather well in the spindle holder. I cut the side open so that it will tighten around the tool when attached to the spindle holder. The price was OK at around 30 EUR in the local hobby shop, so I bought one.īecause there was this 4 mm difference in diameter of the tool and the spindle holder, I found some plastic pipe of approximately correct size and 2 mm wall thickness. This is made of round aluminium, so it fits the circular spindle holder much better than the similar Dremel extension, even if the diameter is just 15mm. So what is needed is a tool that is of that size or smaller, and lightweight enough to be attached to the spindle holder.Īfter some googling around, it seems that Proxxon has a suitable extension for their rotary tool.

The spindle holder in Gravograph VXM has 19mm inner diameter (probably actually 19.05mm, i.e. I also have a flexible shaft attachment for the Dremel, but it has an ergonomically designed roundish shape that is not rigid enough to be installed reliably in the spindle holder. Unfortunately the drill itself is quite bulky and can’t be attached to the small spindle holder of the Gravograph. I do have a Dremel rotary tool however, so the natural process of thought is “how can I hook this up to the Gravograph”.

Gravograph sells TwinCut cutters that have also drill bit expansions, but this is their proprietary system. With the new Grbl-based controller it works nicely for engraving the traces, but it can’t be used for drilling holes. I want to use my Gravograph VXM for making PCBs.
